MPULUNGU, ZAMBIA – Government has directed the Road Development Agency (RDA) to conduct a thorough assessment of bridges in Northern Province.
Northern Province Permanent Secretary Charles Sipanje says there is need to establish the status of crossing points and take remedial measures where needed unlike waiting until bridges are completely destroyed.
The Permanent Secretary made the directive when he inspected on-going works for the installation of a bailey bridge across Lunzuwa River in Mpulungu District where a bridge and section of the road were damaged due to flash floods last month.
And Mr Sipanje says he is impressed with progress made by a combined team of engineers from the RDA, Zambia Army and China Geo Construction at the Lunzuwa site.
He has also urged RDA and the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to expedite the grading of the alternative route which links Mpulungu and Mbala Towns, respectively.
Meanwhile, RDA Regional Manager Simon Chimwando says erecting of the Bailey bridge is expected to be completed by May.
And Mpulungu District Commissioner Dennis Sikazwe says residents in the port town are happy with government’s intervention in restoring steady flow of traffic and business operations in the area.
